In 2017 the firm relocated from leafy Wimbledon to Vauxhall, opposite the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6). Vauxhall and Nine Elms is rapidly becoming a residential, cultural and business quarter and we are right in the heart of this extraordinary transition.
……in the days before email, text, whatsapp, messenger when things got done a lot quicker. I was working for a firm in Covent Garden and the Group HR Director of one of my biggest clients rang to say that they were performing a restructure of the business and that, after 20 years’ service, one of their key directors, Ray Barrett, had chosen to leave as a result of the changes. Would I mind ‘looking after’ him?
Sometime later, after a couple of career advisory meetings, it transpired that he had spent most of his career putting the right people in his businesses, that his wife was a highly experienced HR Director in the retail sector and he definitely had an interest in the recruitment process. It was at their dining table in Battersea that we formed BarrettClark.
The idea was to build a business that operated in the niche leisure sector and we moved into offices in Wimbledon in October 2001. I was one of the very few people in the recruitment sector who specialised in the international leisure sector and had far reaching contacts. We started with a blank sheet but very quickly found success by developing and nurturing key accounts. In January 2002 we hired our first employee, Dewi Jones and he is still with the business as our Senior Partner – he is an outstanding relationship manager and is still in touch with his first clients from 2002 who operate in the specialist areas of Leisure.
BarrettClark developed an excellent reputation for providing clients with candidates who were out of the ordinary in rapidly growing sectors. The business was founded on key values – integrity and treating people well, commitment on delivery and partnership working.
Our team grew and with the growth and by building on candidate and client relationships and through recommendation we were asked to work in other complementary sectors. For example, we were contacted by one of the largest operators of private hospitals in the UK. They knew everyone in their sector and wanted a fresh approach in looking for commercial operators who could lead, manage, market, sell private hospitals and the services up and down the country. We found them Executive Directors and even their Managing Director.
In the early days of BarrettClark we created and sold advertised assignments to clients and ran some very successful campaigns through the Sunday Times Appointments pages. Our talent pool is now extensive and we have seen considerable changes in the technology available. We now have industry leading IT solutions that are apparently in a cloud somewhere…..our systems quickly provide a long list of candidates, many of which we know. The reporting and analysis available to us and our clients is extensive and our service is highly consultative – our candidates are more engaged, they are carefully ‘on-boarded’ and they stay longer in their role, adding more value.
Ray Barrett retired in 2007 and shortly after the UK went into recession, I don’t think these events were linked! We really felt positive winds of change in September 2012.
