On a chilly Monday in late November I was very fortunate to be invited along to a pop-up fundraising dinner at Cafe Spice Namaste by one of my favourite clients, Tracy from HC One, a keen supporter of local and sustainable foods. And what a great evening and food we had too! Sadly I didn’t win the wonderful Christmas hamper and forced myself to sit firmly on my hands to prevent me from bidding on a year supply of chocolate....!
This unique event featured delicious food by both Cyrus Todiwala and Antonio Carluccio – both passionate about home grown fruit and veg - as well as some well-matched fine Bordeaux wine – carefully chosen but not the most obvious accompaniment to spicy food! The money raised will help support Capital Growth community food growing spaces across London in 2013 and local schools working closely with Cyrus to grow their own veggies.
So what is their big idea? Capital Growth www.capitalgrowth.org wants to help transform London by creating 2012 new food growing spaces by the end of 2012. Quite ambitious, I know. They are a partnership initiative between London Food Link http://www.sustainweb.org/londonfoodlink/ , the Mayor of London Boris Johnson, and the Big Lottery's Local Food Fund http://www.localfoodgrants.org/. It is championed by the Chair of the London Food Board Rosie Boycott and offers practical help, grants, training and support to groups wanting to establish community food growing projects as well as advice to landowners.
