Well 2012 is nearly over and we are getting ready to welcome in 2013. With so many significant events taking place in 2012 it has been an exciting year.....so what does 2013 hold? With the negative view on the economy still trundling on it appears that the London restaurant scene is still buoyant and is intent on further securing its grip as being the culinary capital of the world. After some research it appears we have seen over 100 new openings in and around the London area in 2012, and it appears 2013 will not be any different with an abundance of new opening already pencilled in.
Some of the exciting and successful openings in 2012 included:
Bo London Mayfair W1 with Alvin Leung, Domino Room at the Cafe Royal Hotel with Andrew Turner, Electric Diner by Soho House Group in partnership with Brebdan Sodikoff, Wabi London Contemporary Japanese in Lincolns Inn Fields, Hawksmoor Air Street, Colbert in Sloane square by Chris Corbin & Jeremy King, Outlaw’s seafood & grill at the Capital Hotel, Fish Market and New Street Grill at the Old Bengal Warehouse, Duck and Waffle at Heron Tower, Hix at the Tram Shed.
A few of the 2013 openings planned to join the success are:
Brasserie Chavot: January 2013?
Eric Chavot held two Michelin stars at the Capital Hotel when he left London, and now he's returning to be part of the Westbury Hotel (which already has Alyn Williams's restaurant too). The restaurant is going to be a 70-75 seater with a small bar as you enter for pre-dinner drinks, banquette seating and then at the back of the room will be a seafood bar with five seats for counter dining. Food wise, the dishes will be 'classic modern' and range from around France, but this won't be Michelin-style dining and "very reasonably priced for Mayfair".
Sushinho City: January 2013
Brazilian/Japanese fusion moves East. They already have a Sushinho on the King's Road and this will see them opening a second venue on Devonshire Square in the City. Expect the same menu and a basement bar will also be opening at a later date here too.
The Clove Club: February 2013
Having had huge success at the Ten Bells, first with James Lowe as the Young Turks and then under their new name "St Vibes". Now Isaac, Daniel & Johnny are setting up this new restaurant in part of the Shoreditch Town hall renovation which will feature a bar and restaurant with food focused on the style of menu that did so well at the Ten Bells.
Balthazar London: Date February 2013
Keith McNally, an English ex-pat, has done particularly well to make his mark on the New York restaurant scene. Balthazar is a go-to place for most tourists and locals in the Village, McNally is opening a London branch of Balthazar in Covent Garden
Story: Date February 2013?
A Story Book themed restaurant set near Tower Bridge. He has worked with the likes of Rene Redzepi at Noma, and previously with Tom Aikens, Adam Byatt and Thomas Keller. Now Tom Sellers is planning to launch his own restaurant in London called Story. Expect "humble ingredients but Tom puts them together in a creative, inspired way."
The Social Eating House: Date February / March 2013?
Jason Atherton's follow-up to Pollen St Social. The new site which will be situated in Poland Street Soho, is the follow up on the hugely successful Pollen St Social.
The Grain Store: Date April 2013?
Bruno Loubets second London restaurant. It’s taking pride of place in the newly revamped Granary Square in King's Cross and will be a more informal restaurant than Bistrot Bruno Loubet. Expect an intriguing menu, plenty of guest chefs and an enormous outside dining area.
Bilbao Berria: DateSpring 2013?
MasterChef winner Ash Mair is working with this Spanish Pinxtos restaurant to bring the brand to Lower Regent Street London. It will be a mixture of Pinxtos (Basque tapas) and more formal dining with Mair hoping to put his own stamp on it too.
Nothing further to add really but “ENJOY”
